1934
This portion of the article that appeared just before Dayton Speedway's opening event confirms that there was no auto racing in the Dayton area between the 1929 event at the fairgrounds and the Dayton Speedway 1934 opener. Notice that neither Ken Fowler, the eventual feature winner on opening day, nor his Ambler Special are listing as entries! In fact. Fowler had intention of competing at Dayton on opening day.
Check out the Rick Patterson story below for the backstory on Fowler's win.
Someone had to be first, and in the case of Dayton Speedway feature winners, this is the guy who was first, Ken Fowler, shown here at the wheel of the Ambler Special. This photo was not taken at Dayton Speedway, and we're not sure of the date (it could be 1934 or 1935), but we are certain that's Ken at the keyboard, and that's the same Ambler Special he drove to that very first feature event at the then-brand new Dayton Speedway on June 3, 1934.
Fowler ended his active racing career as the USAC sprint division flagman.
The photo comes to us courtesy of the Larry Sullivan collection.
THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY OF FOWLER'S BIG WIN
by RICK PATTERSON
Ken Fowler was from Dayton but he’d moved to the East Coast. He raced the board tracks and dirt tracks and there were plenty of them in the east.
On that weekend in June 1934, Ken had gone to Milwaukee to race on Saturday. After the race he made the 400 mile trip back to Dayton. He wanted to see the Dayton race but had no interest in entering the event. He pulled into Dayton around and stopped at "a restaurant where fans and drivers hung out".
Everyone was surprised when he announced he was not going to race. Ken told them he didn’t have any tires. "You're just afraid to race against the top names" was the teaser the crowd decided to use to get him to race. But he really hadn’t any tires. He had raced in Milwaukee and then towed the car 400 miles to Dayton. (Imagine towing a race car 400 miles in those days.)
One of the track investors stepped up and said he would find him some tires. Fowler still wasn’t interested. The investor then offered Fowler a $1000 bonus if he could win the race. The investor wanted another experienced "Dayton Boy" in the race and figured it was a safe bet since Fowler would surely be exhausted the following morning.
Fowler was no idiot and took the offer. A thousand dollars in 1934 was a lot of money. You know the rest.
After that first race little is heard about Fowler at Dayton Speedway. He chose to go back east and race those tracks. It was one of those areas where you could race midgets 6 or 7 times a week. He had a really bad crash at the Bicycle Velodrome turned Midget Race Track at Nutley, N.J. In the first race there, in 1938, when his midget landed in the stands and injured 13 people and he broke his arm.

*6* Bill Cummins won the 1934 Indy 500. He was entered to race in the opener June 3, 1934 but was unable to compete because of other commitments in Indianapolis. None-the-less he rode his Harley, with his wife on the back, all the way from Indy to be at Dayton Speedway for the opening race. He took a parade lap on the motorcycle and waved to the cheering crowd.
*7* Milt Marion won the first Stock Car race on the Beach at Daytona in 1936. And Wild Bill Cummins was on the pole for that race!!
*8* Lloyd Vieaux participated in the opener on June 3. He would die in a racing accident on July 22, 1934 at Lakewood.
*9* Henry Meyer would build cars for Greeneville’s John Iddings in the 1950’s. Meyer built the cars in his basement.
