Race Notes:

For the first time the track has been revised to a 5/8-mile oval shape.  After the July rainout, AAA withdrew it’s sanctioning for the track.  They claimed the track was too dangerous for drivers and fans alike.  The track at that time was “D” shaped with the start/finish line being on the straight part of the “D”.  This meant the driver raced at full speed down the front stretch and had to turn  90 degrees to enter the backstretch/rounded section of the course.  Then another hard left (while speeding directly towards the grandstand section).

The front-stretch has been resurfaced with a tar and Asphalt compound.  Oil is also used.  I would imagine these steps were taken to help keep the dust at bay for fans and drivers.

Glen Meyers crashed his Crager during qualifying.  The Crager was the car that was formerly driven to several world records by the late Bob Carey. Entering the forth turn Meyer blew a tire.  The Crager shot toward the outside fence, climbed up the fence and straddled it.  When the car finally came to rest, it had turned over on the track with Meyer still inside.  Luckily he was uninjured and was able to get a ride in the car owned by Ray Campbell.

(1)     Engle had been driving the Vance car all year.  But an article, the day prior to the race, said Charley would be driving for Crager? Maybe it was a Vance owned Crager.

(2)     Sonny Morse or Morris (spelled two different ways) was a member of the Mass. Bar Association.

(3)     Wohlfield was referred to as the “Dirt Track Champion”

(4)     Spelled Glen and Glenn, Meyers, Meyer, and Myer.

(5)     Referred to as “The New Lockhart”

(6)     Musick was referred to as the “current record holder”. Since the track was changed from the “D” shape to the new 5/8 mile oval shape, Musick well always be the record holder for the “D” shaped 5/8 mile Dayton Speedway with a time of 30.9 seconds.

As mentioned, the race this day is the re-scheduled race from July 21, 1935. Other drivers listed to be at the track that day (who may or may not have returned to race August 18, 1935):

Everett Rice                               Hisso                            Crawfordsville, Ind

Red Campbell                                                                St.
Louis

Merle Strain                               (Al Gordon’s old car)      Bloomington, Ill

Ben Music                                 McDowell                      Lincoln, NE

Ernie Jones                               Hal                               Canton, Oh

Shorty

Dexter                                                                St. Petersburg
, FLA.

Paul Williamson                         Hal                               Akron

Ralph Miller                               Miller Spl (7)

(7)     Ralph Miller entered two cars and had not found any drivers for the July race.  Perhaps he drove one and Frazine drove the other in the August re-scheduled race.

The promoters of the race had a new idea.  Fans could park at the Soldiers Home and use the “Peoples Railroad” to be bussed to the track.  This would help with parking and traffic in the area.
